Amazon Rainforest Conservancy presentation, Thursday May 21st, 2015

This morning the students continued work on the exhibition projects .
Special event
Mrs. Jana Bell, the president and CEO of the Amazon Rainforest Conservacy (ARC for short) came to The Maples Academy as a guest speaker. She was accompanied by her colleague Charlotte Stitt and together they gave an amazing presentation about the work of the organization in the Amazon Rainforest (of Peru).
Interesting fact: of the 40, 000 different plant species found in the Amazon Rainforest, humans only know how to use 1% of them for medicine.
Through the PYP Exhibition the students have learned a lot about conservation and were able to answer her questions eloquently. The presentation was stimulating and the students were deeply engaged. The students demonstrated the depth of their knowledge through poignant questions and the conversations they had with Mrs. Bell and Ms. Stitt.
At the end of her presentation Mrs. Bell viewed the presentation boards and some videos from the Exhibition projects. The students were eager and happy to showcase their work. She was very impressed.
This was an inspirational and interesting talk and we are very grateful Mrs. Bell took the time to visit us. On behalf of the Grade 5 and 6 class we would like to thank you.
Students had their music lesson after lunch and practiced their presentations during the last unit of inquiry period of the day.
Take a look at some pictures from the day.
