The students utilized what they learned the previous day in math (rounding decimals) and applied it to add and subtract decimal numbers using estimation. Grade 5's worked from their textbook on p. 128/129 # 1, 2, 4, 7 and 9. Grade 6's were assigned questions from their textbook on p. 130 # 1, 2, 4, 5 and 8.
After first recess the dance groups presented their information and dance to the rest of the class. We even had a few extra audience members as some of The Maples staff dropped by to see the dancers. Language followed dance and the students continued their dragon narrative writing.
Since we have been investigating religious celebrations and holidays in the unit of inquiry, the art project this afternoon centred around the Mexican celebration "El Dia de los Muertos." Also known as "The Day of the Dead," this celebration is when families get together to remember loved ones that have passed away. They tell stories, sing songs, have food and decorate the cemeteries with flowers. Another aspect of this day is the masks that people wear. In class, each student made their own mask and focused on symmetrical, vibrantly coloured designs.
Students finished the day by researching their religious item that they will be making for the unit of inquiry.
Have a great weekend!
