Today was a testing day in the class. To begin, the students composed a report style piece of writing. The goal was to see what knowledge and skill they had at this style. They brainstormed ideas and turned those ideas into sentences.
After recess, they wrote a math pre-test to see where they are with respect to their numeration skills. The grade 5's completed 10 questions, while the grade 6's had 8. I let the students know before hand that they wouldn't know how to do all of the questions on the test and that it was ok if they didn't know how to answer. The point was to see where we need to build on their skills.
To finish the day we started our first Unit of Inquiry. We talked about the three states of matter and where we find them in our daily lives. The most common is water which goes from ice to water to steam. We will continue by discovering the characteristics of solid, liquids and gases.
In the email I sent home this evening I attached the classroom schedule and a letter about our class basket. Please make sure to read both of those.
