Articles and reports are the focus of the students' writing in language. We discussed the purpose of article and reports and what makes them interesting to read. The students read an article and highlighted the adjectives and verbs that made the article more entertaining. Students have been asked to bring in a magazine or newspaper to look at the work of experts and take ideas from them.
As the grade 6's continued with divisibility rules in math on p. 15 of their textbook, the grade 5's had a lesson about using the idea of input/output machines to create useful tables of information. These tables can also be used to predict future event or goals. They answered some questions on p. 18 #1 and 2.
Our unit of inquiry was spent looking at the first leader (pharaoh) of Egypt and how he came to be in power. The students discovered that information wasn't as easy to come across because recorded history wasn't as complete back then. They provided reasons as to how a person could be placed in that position of power. They have been asked to research the responsibilities of rulers of ancient civilizations and create a list that details what their priorities would have been as a leader during that time period.
