The students have been showing some improvement in gym with working together to make as many layups in 2 minutes as possible. Their goal was to beat the 11 they got last time. They successfully made 13 today, even with a slow start. They followed their triumph with a closely contested game.
We went over the two perimeter formulas that they grade 5's developed last math class and then they were assigned p. 329 #2, 3, 5-10 in their textbook. The grade 6's had all of their previous day's work checked and corrected. They then worked through how the volume of a triangular prism is calculated. They knew how to calculate the area of a triangle and made an assumption that to calculate the volume, you only needed to multiply the area by the height of the prism. They tried this new formula on p. 142 #1 and p. 143 #1. Looking ahead to the unit test, I would expect that students should be prepared for it to happen at the end of next week, probably on Friday (Feb. 20th).
To finish the day, we first had a brief language class. The grade 6's took up chapter 10, while the grade 5's finished up any remaining work from "Sadako". We also looked at how past religions have started in the unit of inquiry. We began making a list of reasons cultures and individuals have chosen to begin a new belief system.
