For the last week, we have been starting every math class with a "Math Minute". During this minute, students have been answering as many multiplication facts as they can. Everyone has noticed some improvement since the first time we did it, whether it is completing more questions or answering a higher percentage correctly. We will continue to do this to help increase our speed and automaticity. The grade 6's continued with their work on order of operations in the textbook. They were assigned p. 56 #1, 3-5, 8 and 9. The grade 5's were assigned a partner and asked to solve 4 questions using the mental math multiplication strategies taught last week. After, the made corrections in their homework book and answered question 2 on p. 27. Then they started on p. 56 #1 in their textbook.
Gym class followed work on language skill unit 3. We played a soccer game and enjoyed the great weather.
During language, the students read and completed questions for chapter 8. They also had enough time to craft their written response.
Now that our boats are finished, we got to look at a few of our experiments from the previous week in the unit of inquiry. There are crystals growing on the bottom of our cup with water and alum in it. Unfortunately, only a couple small ones have grown on our yellow pipe cleaner star. Also, we saw how boiled water has less air in it then tap water does. We examined the two blocks of ice and you could clearly see more air bubbles in the tap water. Finally, we talked about chemical changes in matter versus physical changes. We ended the class by creating a chemical change with baking soda and vinegar and making our own "volcano" eruption.
