The day started with our unit of inquiry. The students orally summarized what they learned yesterday about chemical and physical changes. Today's discussion centred around rust and how it occurs in nature. We discovered that it happens due to a chemical reaction, which produces oxidization. Also, we wanted to test if heat is produced during a chemical change. To do that we placed steel wool in vinegar to start the process. Then we emptied the vinegar and left the steel wool in the cup with a thermometer to see if the temperature changed during the chemical reaction.
The grade 5's worked on p. 57 # 4-6 in math. Those that finished made corrections. The grade 6's completed the 2 remaining questions in the lesson and then had everything taken up. They have moved onto adding multiple numbers and only were assigned the first question in the textbook.
Chapter 8 answers were reviewed in langauge. After, they had enough time to read chapter 9 and complete the questions. The students were informed that there will be a comprehension test for "The Mixed Up Files" next Tuesday. That gives everyone a week to prepare. We went over in class things that they can do to make sure they are ready.
