We took up our answers to chapter 9 in language. We heard several answers to each question and talked about how some were more complete than others. The writing response asked students to pretend to be either Jamie or Claudia driving up in the taxi to Mrs. Frankweiler's house. We focused on using good descriptive words while trying to capture what they would see and what they would think.
In math, the grade 6's added and subtracted from their textbook on p. 62 #1-4, 6, 7, 9 and 10. Finding 4 consecutive numbers that add to 866 was the most difficult question. The grade 5's had a few questions taken up before trying out a couple methods for multiplying 2 digit numbers together. Most students preferred the traditional method with two rows and using the zero place holder. A few others applied the break apart, multiply and add method. They were assigned question 1 and 2 on p. 59 of their textbook.
Even though the grass was damp, we still went outside to play soccer for gym. There may be a couple mud marks on some gym uniforms.
We continued to explore chemical changes in matter in the unit of inquiry. In one demonstration, lemon juice was spread on a piece of paper and then held over a flame for heat. The heat turned the areas with lemon juice brown and left the paper still white. In the other demonstration, we lit a marshmallow on fire and watched it go from a solid, to a liquid, to a gas. We paused to observe it at it's different stages.
