Our first task of the day was to get our classroom looking like a classroom again. Once we were settled, we took up the final chapter of our language novel. For our comprehension test tomorrow, we went over what makes a good short answer. We focused on using part of the question in the answer, making sure that all parts of the question are answered and making note of what the question is out of and making sure to included that many points. Following that, we discussed what makes a good interview question. We used a recent news story to give examples of what we would ask that person. Over the week, students will be "interviewing" a character from the novel and writing up their questions as well as what the characters responses would be.
In math, the grade 6's immediately started their multiplying questions. They were assigned p. 66/67 #1, 3, 5, 6, 9-11. The grade 5's had their multiplication taken up. Then we took some time to go over proper rounding skills. We rounded to the nearest ten, hundred and thousand. The students then applied these skills to estimating quotients. The students were encouraged to make the dividend as friendly as possible for the divisor. The grade 5's only had time to try question #1 from their homework book.
Students became chemists today during our unit of inquiry. They were tasked with making observations while mixing 7 different powders. They tested icing sugar, kosher salt, Epsom salt, flour, Borax and corn starch. After mixing the substance with powder, they used their senses to record observations.
We ended our day with some soccer in gym class. Wednesday will be our last day outside before we come in and begin volleyball.
