We have started playing volleyball in gym class. Last day the students practiced tossing and catching the ball and today we added in an overhead volley. They worked individually and with a partner on tossing the ball to themselves and volleying it with the correct technique. There will be a junior volleyball team again this year. The information is in the "Reminders/Events" sidebar. Please let your child know if they are able to attend the tournament on that date if they are interested in trying out.
We began our new number patterns math unit today. We started by making a checklist of the types of questions the students will need to know. As we work through the unit, we'll check off things they learn. Also, we talked about input/output machines and how they work. We'll continue with this concept and try some questions tomorrow. Math tests from Friday have been graded, but not returned. I will be having a conference with each student individually to go over what they did well and where their work needs corrections.
After lunch the students had an opportunity to work on their matter mystery write up for the unit of inquiry. Groups weren't able to finish today, so Mrs. Burke still roams free until we can complete this task.
During our last period we discussed what the students will be doing with their new novels in language. There will be three different novels in the class. Each student has been assigned to a novel and will read it along with their group members. While reading, they will complete literature circle jobs. The jobs have the students take on various roles and everyone presents their work the next day in the group. The students will then rotate jobs so that they have a chance to try everything.
