We needed to finish a job from last week first thing this morning. Since we had so many visitors to our museum on Friday, we didn't have time to have everyone present their artifact. We went around the room and each student talked about what they made and provided information about it.
The students worked on unit #6 in language skills before going to gym. In gym, we started practicing floor hockey skills. Students practiced moving with the stick and stick handling through pylons.
With everything taken up in math, both grades were able to learn about sorting shapes and describing polygon attributes. The grade 5's focused on number of sides and naming the sides, while the grade 6's included angles, regular/irregular, parallel sides and equal sides. The grade 5's were assigned p. 36 and 37 in the homework book.
In the unit of inquiry, students were put into groups of 3 or 4 and were assigned to make a brochure promoting an ancient civilization. We talked about brochures and what makes a good brochure. Then we made a list of the possible topics that could be used in the brochure. The students came up with food, buildings/architecture, "shopping", events/festivals, battles, weapons/tools and "tourist sites". It is a 6 page brochure, with one page for a title (obviously) and 5 pages for topics. Students will have time this week to work on it in class.
